Architectural Door

About this class

This is a 2-day class focused on material processing for and construction of a custom architectural door, utilizing the Festool System.

In the Architectural Door Workshop, we will cover the tools and techniques necessary to construct a custom 1 3/4" thick "two panel" interior door, with genuine tongue and groove panels. Though participants will walk away with a range of broadly applicable skills, the class will concentrate primarily on the precise and efficient breakdown, processing, and joining of raw materials using Festool saws, joiners, routers, sanders, dust extractors, parallel guides, MFT tables, and more. 

This should be considered an intermediate level class, and since most of the two days will be spent in the shop using the tools, we request that registrants have some previous knowledge of the Festool System, and/or the basics of trim carpentry or furniture construction. Safety glasses and earplugs will be required during all tool use.

Participants will be asked to sign a standard liability waiver during the registration process or at the outset of class. If this presents a problem, please let us know beforehand, since this will impact our ability to allow you to work with the tools.

 

Objective:
Participants will leave this class with a better understanding of architectural door construction and applications, while learning Festool System based techniques that will enable them to achieve better results in less time, and with less waste.

Participants will learn and work as teams, as they build their skills while creating an architectural door. Completed doors will be donated to benefit nonprofit organizations.

 

Topics

The following topics will be covered:

  • Processing laminated door frame timbers into precise frame members
  • Straightlining or jointing edges for frame and panels using the TS 55
  • Consistent dimensioning of identical components using the Kapex Miter Saw and Parallel guides
  • Aligning and joining materials into a structural frame using the Domino XL
  • Creating stopped grooves for panels using the OF2200 and Plexi-glass routing aid 
  • Proper setup and use of CMS Router Table for creating tongue and groove joinery
  • Proper glue up and clamping processes
  • Clean and efficient sanding of large surfaces and individual components, including abrasive selection and grit progression
  • Additional lecture time to cover design & construction consideration for exterior doors as well
